The WWE Championship is widely recognized as the most historic championship in sports-entertainment. Dating back to 1963, the WWE Championship was first awarded to Buddy Rogers after he defeated Antonino Rocca in the finals of a tournament in April. Since that time, the biggest names in the business have held the WWE Championship, including Bruno Sammartino, Andre the Giant, Bret Hart, The Rock, Stone Cold and many more.
Check out the history of the ECW World Title, from Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka all the way up to Johnny Nitro, who won his first-ever ECW World Title at Vengeance: Night of Champions.
The Intercontinental Championship has been viewed as one of the most prestigious awards in the world of sports-entertainment. Since its inception in September 1979, many greats have captured the Intercontinental Championship, including Hall of Famers Pat Patterson, Don Muraco, Tito Santana and Greg Valentine. Additionally, many of today's top Superstars have enjoyed reigns as Intercontinental Champion, including Shawn Michaels, The Rock, Chris Jericho and Triple H. Below is the complete list of Intercontinental Champions. Click on each name for more information on the champion.
Unlike most other championships currently defended on RAW and SmackDown!, the United States Championship did not start out as a recognized WWE Championship. Rather, the U.S. Championship got its roots in WCW. Many of wrestling's greatest names have staked claim to the U.S. Championship during the title's early years, including WWE Hall of Famers Sgt. Slaughter and Greg Valentine. With each great name that captured the championship came more prestige. In the late 1990s, however, the U.S. Championship was vacated more times than sports-entertainment fans could keep up with. As a result, the championship lost a bit of its luster. Several years later, the U.S. Championship finally regained the glory it held in years past when competitors like Eddie Guerrero, Booker T and John Cena fought over it in many memorable battles.
With decades of action behind it, no other prize in tag team wrestling has more history behind it than the World Tag Team Championship. As a result of its long-standing prestige, there have been countless battles over the World Tag Team Championship, including the Hart Foundation/Demolition best-of-three match at SummerSlam 1990, Owen Hart and Yokozuna's victory over The Smokin' Gunns at WrestleMania XI and the amazing TLC Matches featuring Edge & Christian, The Dudleys and The Hardys.
While the WWE Tag Team Championship only dates back to 2002, it is still considered one of the most prestigious championships in the history of tag team wrestling. The championship got its start after it was decided that the World Tag Team Championship would be exclusive to the RAW brand. After this announcement, then-SmackDown! General Manager Stephanie McMahon created her own version of the Tag Team Championship. She then declared that the fist champions would be the duo that survived a brutal tournament. The victors of that tournament were Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit. Since that time, many great tag teams have staked claim to the prestigious championship, including the Dudleys, Los Guerreros and the World's Greatest Tag Team. Below is a complete list of the WWE Tag Team Champions. Click each team for more
With a half of a century of tradition associated with it, the Women's Championship is the pinnacle of female wrestling. The championship's first title-holder, Fabulous Moolah, is also considered the most successful, as her first reign lasted nearly three decades. Since that time, Lita, Chyna, Trish Stratus and many other great names have enjoyed reigns atop the women's division.
Since its inception in WCW in late 1991, the Cruiserweight Championship has had a roller coaster of an existence. Its first obstacle was overcoming an almost four-year lull when WCW failed to re-establish the championship after stripping Brad Armstrong in 1992. Since that time, several other questionable decisions were made, most notably when both Lenny Lane and The Artist were stripped of their championships in controversial fashion. In addition to all this, the Cruiserweight Championship also found its way around the waists of the likes of Madusa and Oklahoma. Despite all this, the Cruiserweight Championship has become the highest accolade in cruiserweight wrestling. It is because of the recent efforts of Superstars such as Gregory Helms, Chavo Guerrero and Jamie Noble that the Cruiserweight Championship is held in such high regard.

DALLAS – In addition to crowning a new Intercontinental Champion and lining up John Cena’s next challenger for the WWE Championship, Raw’s highlights also included clips from Triple H’s arduous road to recovery from a torn right quadriceps. Although The Game wasn’t there in person, just seeing the 10-time World Champion back on the TitanTron screen had many of our fans at the American Airlines Center buzzing.
“When The Game returns, he’s putting WWE on notice,” predicted Jack Sanhall of Irving, Texas. “Look at what he accomplished after coming back from injury in 2002—he not only won the WWE Title a fifth time, he became a five-time World Heavyweight Champion as well. There’s no way anyone will stop Triple H from becoming an 11-time World Champion.”
“Those Triple H promos have made my week,” stated Red Oak resident Ann-Marie Nuhaltz. “Now I only need Shawn Michaels to come back too. I’d love to see those two in the ring again.”
No one knows the condition of HBK, who at Judgment Day last May suffered a potential career-ending concussion at the hands—and boot—of Randy Orton. Dallas local Victor Flores thinks that alone should provide extra incentive for the returning Game, who last January tore his right quad while he and Michaels battled Orton and Edge at New Year’s Revolution.
“Personally, I think he should stop off at SmackDown first,” Flores said. “That way, he can kick the crap out of Edge, then go back to Raw and get some revenge against Orton. That ought to be his first priority; let ’em all know that you can’t get away with hurting the Cerebral Assassin or his friends.”
Back in March, Triple H informed WWE.com that his rehabilitation had been progressing so well that he hoped a SummerSlam return was feasible. Judging from the video shown on Raw Monday night, the Biggest Party of the Summer might become the homecoming site for one of WWE’s greatest Superstars.
“I think Triple H will go after The Champ [Cena],” said Waxahachie-based WWE fan Rod Williams, “but I also want to see him go after some of Raw’s new guys, like Snitsky or Kennedy. Definitely Kennedy; somebody needs to shut that guy up, big-time.”
Good point. So good, in fact, that WWE.com asks Williams how he thinks The Game might fare against Bobby Lashley. “Wow, that would be good,” the teen replied enthusiastically. “Lashley’s one of my favorites, and I hope he’s right about what he said tonight—that he won’t be an uncrowned champion much longer. If Lashley can beat Cena at The Great American Bash, putting him in the ring against Triple H would make a great WWE Title Match…maybe one of the best.”
For now, inside sources either can’t or won’t confirm exactly when Triple H will make his return. However, as the sold-out American Airlines Center crowd demonstrated on Raw Monday night, one thing is certain: Once it is time again to play The Game, our fans are going to enjoy every moment of it.

Preview:John Cena vs. Bobby Lashley for the WWE Championship
June 24, 2007
Our fans are in for a dream battle at The Great American Bash, as Bobby Lashley will challenge John Cena for the WWE Championship. Loyal viewers of Raw have been waiting for these two to clash one-on-one since Lashley arrived in last month’s WWE Draft.
Since the moment Lashley was drafted to Raw, he has displayed a raging hunger for championship gold. When Lashley was drafted, Jonathan Coachman stripped him of the ECW World Title; however, immediately after Coachman pried the title from his hands, Lashley said everything was all right, and he would fight his way back to the top once again and prove to be a champion.
He got his first chance at Vengeance: Night of Champions, where he was one of four men challenging Cena in the WWE Championship Challenge Match. However, The Champ was victorious that night, pinning Mick Foley to retain the gold.
That left Lashley back on the outside, but he earned his opportunity on the July 2 Raw. It was Beat The Clock night, and when Lashley beat William Regal in X:XX, he bested King Booker’s time to win the contest and earn his ticket to San Jose, Calif.
Both men have earned respect in the locker room and among our audiences, and both have proven to be champions; but which man will leave The Great American Bash as WWE Champion?

The World Heavyweight Championship was brought to RAW by then-General Manager Eric Bischoff after WWE Champion Brock Lesnar became exclusive to SmackDown. Bischoff awarded the Championship to Triple H, but he had to defend it against his then-best friend, Ric Flair. Triple H was successful and has held the Championship on five different occasions. Other holders of this prestigious Championship include Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, Rey Mysterio and more.
Vengeance: Night of Champions is this Sunday live on pay-per-view
Debate has spread like wildfire regarding who will walk out of the WWE Championship Challenge with the title in hand. Each Superstar involved has a case as to why they’ll emerge as the victor. In the end, it could come down to circumstance; but anything can happen in WWE, and banking on circumstance to bend in one’s favor is as foolish as taking someone in the match lightly. Below, in no particular order, is an analysis of what type of mentality each of the five potentially gold-bound Superstars will carry with them heading into Sunday’s WWE Championship Challenge.
After getting shipped to Raw in the draft, Lashley was immediately stripped of his ECW World Title. The hardships he faced to reclaim that championship were the equivalent of going through hell and back, as the late Mr. McMahon did everything in his billion-dollar power to keep the gold out of Lashley’s grasp. Without losing ECW’s top prize in the center of the ring like the fighting champion he’s proven to be, that leaves 273-pounds of angry muscle ready to throw some haymakers. Come Sunday, can vengeance be his?
Being sidelined by a neck-tweaking Tombstone through the announcer’s table from Undertaker sent the King to his quarters for months. Before having a chance to prove to SmackDown if King Booker would still reign supreme even after such a serious injury, the Draft put Booker with his Queen Sharmell on Raw.
In his first pay-per-view since returning from injury, questions regarding King Booker’s wind have come about. He’ll be competing with a rejuvenated Randy Orton, The Champ’s insatiable work ethic, Bobby Lashley’s determination to dominate and let’s not forget Mick Foley’s ability to go berserk at the sound of the ring bell. One has to wonder if ring rust will spoil his majesty’s victory, or if King Booker has something in store for the four “serfs” he’ll compete against.
Mick Foley:
Considering how many moons have passed since Foley competed in the ring, one could argue he’s the underdog. However, smart money wouldn’t count the Hardcore Legend out.
On Raw, Umaga rammed Foley’s head into the steel ring stairs. True to form, Foley refused medical attention afterward. However, it wasn’t the refusal that caught the attention of onlookers. It was the “sadistic” gleam in Foley’s eye. Rumors that something jarred yet another screw loose in the former World Champion’s head have some people speculating that Mick Foley circa 1998 had been resurrected. If that’s the case, Cena – and everyone else in the ring – must be taken that into consideration.
There’s no room for argument – in competition, when Foley’s off mentally, he’s as on as anyone in the business.
Randy Orton:
Since taking on his latest (and hopefully last) disciplinary action, the Legend Killer has vowed to WWE.com on numerous occasions that he’ll mow through any and all challengers to recapture the WWE Championship. With what can only seem to be lead in his boot, Orton has certainly made good on his promise thus far, leaving three Superstars out of action – including perennial WrestleMania main-eventer Shawn Michaels and ECW Original Rob Van Dam.
The self-assured, quick-tongued Orton hasn’t tightened his lips since returning from suspension, but has seemed to back his words up more aggressively than ever before. If odds were on the board, how couldn’t Orton be the frontrunner? He’s been virtually unstoppable, and even in defeat is just as dangerous (ask RVD if he’s recovered from the concussion Orton gave him). For months, Orton has claimed sticking it to those who say he’s not the talent he used to be is his only importance; on Sunday, he’ll have a chance to back that statement up.
And then there’s John Cena. You can never count The Champ out. As resilient as anyone who has competed in the ring, Cena's closest ally isn’t just that he’s as strong as an ox…but it’s his smarts that truly elevate him into a new stratosphere of greatness. If he’s outsized like when facing The Great Khali, he compensates with quickness. If he’s a step behind his opponent as he was when he faced Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 23, he relies on punishment and picking the right spots to strike. It’s as if his ability to adapt is unparalleled by anyone in sports-entertainment today.
Cena thrives on challenges, and with four top-tier Superstars hungry to rip the title away from him, it’s time for The Champ to once again outthink, outmaneuver and outlast his opponents in order to retain his title.

February 16, 2004. To many, that was just another cold, dreary Monday in the middle of winter. That day was President’s Day, but I know for a fact that there were two men who felt like kings, and one of those men was Eddie Guerrero. The night before at No Way Out, Eddie reached the pinnacle of the sports-entertainment world, winning the WWE Championship from Brock Lesnar. Feb. 16 was the first day of the rest of his career, his first full day as the No. 1 star in the wrestling world.
There are a lot of people, both in the wrestling community as a whole and on the Internet, that have shared their positive memories of Eddie. I’ve spoken with Eddie a few times on the telephone, doing various interviews or calling him to talk about Byte This!, yet I’ve only met him in person once; still, that’s all I needed to know that he was as “cool” behind the scenes as he was once the red light was on. So, I don’t have any cool Eddie stories to share, but as a fan, I have a lot of great memories of watching him. And as I thought about it, I realized that there was even a little irony involved.
Back in WCW, Chavo Guerrero used to wear a t-shirt that read “Eddie Guerrero is my favorite wrestler” on the front. For many fans worldwide, that statement was more fact than fiction. From Mexico to Japan, from a dingy bingo hall in South Philly to Madison Square Garden, there were Eddie Guerrero fans everywhere and anywhere you went. Me? For a good period of time, Eddie Guerrero really WAS my favorite wrestler.
When I was younger, I used to read every wrestling magazine I could get my hands on, and would go out of my way to find a way to watch wrestling any time it came on my TV. My parents used to think I was crazy when they’d come out into the living room on a Saturday afternoon, and find me watching AAA Wrestling from Mexico on the Spanish-language channel. I always loved the heels, and in the early 1990s, there was no one better for my viewing pleasure then Eddie Guerrero.
At the time, Eddie and the late Art Barr were members of a faction called “Los Gringos Locos,” and they were one of the most hated duos I ever saw. If you’ve ever seen the When Worlds Collide pay-per-view from 1994, you’ll know that the pop Octagon & El Santo got when they beat Eddie & Art in a Hair vs. Mask Match might be one of the biggest you’ll ever hear. I watched in rapt attention at everything they did. Everyone hated them, but they were awesome, and MAN could they wrestle.
When Eddie, along with guys like Rey Mysterio and Juventud, showed up in ECW in 1995, I would stay up well past midnight on Saturdays to check them out on the MSG network. His 2-out-of-3 Falls Match with Dean Malenko on their last night in ECW is still one of my favorite matches of all time. I ended up moving to Philly for college, but Eddie and the gang were long gone to WCW by then. And as you could guess, Nitro and WCW Saturday Night became appointment television.
As the years went on, other Superstars became my “favorites” at various times, but I was always entertained by Latino Heat. From his days with Chyna, to awesome rivalries with RVD and Stone Cold on RAW, to Los Guerreros lying, cheating and stealing their way to the top, Eddie was always a highlight. And a lot of nights I was live in the arena, Eddie provided a moment I’ll never forget.
I was there the night the Radicalz made their WWE debut in Pittsburgh, as I made the 5-hour drive from Philly with several of my friends even after RAW had been at the Wachovia Center the week before. I was in the TD Waterhouse Center the night Eddie & Tajiri were on Piper’s Pit in 2003, when Tajiri spit tequila all over a WWE Hall of Famer. And I was at Survivor Series 2002, when Los Guerreros captured the WWE Tag Team Championship together.
As for the night Eddie Guerrero became WWE Champion, well, that’s where the irony comes in. See, I wasn’t in San Francisco celebrating with Eddie. And I wasn’t even in my living room, watching it on pay-per-view.
I was here. About 200 feet from where I’m sitting now, watching it on the big screen here in my office. You know how I said there was another man who felt like a king on Feb. 16, 2004? That man was me, because that morning, a 23-year-old kid named Lou officially joined the WWE team. And the night before, thanks to a personal friend who also worked here, I sat and watched one of the men I always enjoyed climb the highest mountain in the business.
The next day, I drove through the cold Connecticut morning, ready to begin my first day working for a company I only ever dreamed of being part of. And that same morning, out on the west coast, Eddie Guerrero woke up as the WWE Champion, a milestone that until that day he had only ever dreamed he would reach.
You can call me bizarre for thinking of that, but until Sunday, that fact was a minute afterthought in time to me too. Now, exactly 19 months later, it’s a harsh reminder that one of my favorites will never again light up my TV screen. I’ll never forget where I was on February 16, 2004; unfortunately, I’ll also never forget where I was the morning of November 13, 2005 either, when my boss asked me to come in to work because Eddie Guerrero had passed away.
So thank you, Eddie. Thank you for everything you’ve done in your career. Thank you for the LWO, thank you for making it cool to lie, cheat and steal, and most of all, thank you for being someone who’s entertained the hell out of me for a dozen years. At my desk here, I have a shelf that contains several pieces of wrestling memorabilia I’ve collected over the years. As of today, there’s a Best of ECW and WCW series Eddie Guerrero figure that will reside on that shelf. You signed it for me the only time I ever met you personally, and from now on, every time I look at it I’ll smile and remember. Gracias, mi amigo.
Bye
